Dear friends and supporters,
Summer has officially arrived on Lesvos with temperatures over 30°C in the past days, but our work on Lesvos does not stop.
Updates from Paréa:
Creating shade and setting up relaxing areas
Last year, during the summer there were several heatwaves with over 40° endangering the wellbeing of camp residents who often live in small and crowded housing units without a fan or a refrigerator, in a camp located on the seashore and completely exposed to the extreme weather conditions.
Lately, we have been working to create as much shade as possible in Paréa, together with some quiet corners with hammocks where our visitors can rest. Moreover, we have been renovating the children’s playground (which has been exposed to heavy rains and wind in the winter) with wood and fresh paint to welcome the youngest visitors in a safe way.
Preparing for Refugee Week (17-21/06)
The 20th of June is Refugee Day! On this day and throughout the whole week, we reflect on what it means to be a refugee, celebrate and honor the strength of people on the move and raise awareness about the topic. While on the 18th, we host a big community event with music, food and activities around the center (including a circus show), we also have smaller events during the week. On the 19th, we’ll take part in a running event in the city organized in collaboration with the UNHCR and other partner organizations for everyone interested in participating, including locals, camp residents and NGO workers. On the same day, we will have the first of a series of cooking workshops in our Women Space to discover traditional foods from the camp communities and create a moment of exchange between different cuisines and cultures.
You’re all welcome to join the celebrations if you’re around! And check out our Instagram page in the next few weeks for live photos and videos!
If you would like to receive regular updates about the situation on the island, our work and impact in Paréa Lesvos, check out the monthly reports regularly published on our website.
Upcoming events in Frankfurt am Main, Germany:
Since a part of our team is based in Frankfurt, Germany, we also regularly have events going on here. This June, we want to invite you for the following events and would be happy to see you there:
On the 8th of June, we will take part in Democracy Day, an event aiming to mobilize young people to participate in the European elections on the following day. From 3pm on, you will find us with an information stand on Opernplatz. We are looking forward to meeting you, handing out information material and talking about what we value the most, a Europe that cares! The day will continue with a concert in the square.
On the 27th of June, we’re hosting a sorting event in our storage in Frankfurt and would need volunteers who want to get active and help. Are you interested? Contact us at contact@europecares.org.
For more upcoming events, follow this newsletter and our social media channels!

Our community in solidarity needs people like you to keep fighting for a world where everyone feels safe and welcomed! Every small donation makes a difference in the lives of people on the move. Thank you for considering this important commitment and for being an integral part of Europe Cares!
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me via silvia.lucibello@europecares.org. We are happy to share more info on our work and the situation on the island.
